around the shop

Just thought we would let you all in on everything that is new around the store….  Stop by and let us know what you think!  Can’t wait to see you!

bike shop

One of my favorite places for shopping and dining in California is {The LAB}.  It is this funky little center (known as the anti-mall) with great shops and restaurants (Habana is one of my very favorites!).  In the parking lot at the Lab is this awesome airstream turned bike shop.  I absolutely love the atmosphere this guy has created and will be sure to pick up a bike from him next time I need one.  If you are in the area, be sure to stop by.  And do check out the amazing vintage crates he makes into bike baskets!

I absolutely love his business hours sign.
Do you think we could get away with this at the Willows?

I only have a few days left in beautiful California, any more suggestions on places I absolutely don’t want to miss this trip?  I would love a new shop or restaurant to try out!

guest blogger: mari of design shuffle

Hi all! It’s Mari and I write as guest blogger for Design Shuffle, a fantastic social networking site for interior designers, architects, design professionals and enthusiasts to upload their work and receive lots of exposure. I love my work because I get to explore the beautiful world of interior design every day and then write about it, along with the great decorating ideas I discover along the way.†I’m so excited to be here at The Willows {blog} today. As you know, there’s always something very interesting going at The Willowsóand everyone feels so welcome.

Let’s talk about a subject near and dear to the hearts of many of you–vintage suitcases. We’re already hooked and can’t get enough of these intriguing pieces. They carry with them tales of yesteryear and bygone travel adventures. From our admittedly biased point of view, they add a historical feel, a sense of mystery and simply “belong” in any room. See what you think. We hope you enjoy these beautiful ways to decorate with vintage suitcases.

Stacked to the ceiling in the corner of a traditional living room, this is an enviable collection of vintage suitcases. A great conversation starter!

Vintage suitcases also work well in pale Swedish or French Country rooms. Don’t they look wonderful next to the grouping of hatboxes beneath this antique work bench?

Small pieces can also be used to great effect with other found objects and a bouquet fresh of flowers like this one casually arranged in a galvanized metal container.

Another fabulous stack of vintage suitcases reaching almost to the ceiling looks really stunning in this entry and hallway. Think of all the extra storage they provide. Good looking decorative element and great functionalityóa perfect pairing.

A stylish display of luggage is an inspired choice to go with this “world traveler” vignette. Perhaps a bit more modern than many of the rooms we’re looking at today, but definitely one of the living room ideas to remember.

Regardless of which direction your bedroom design is going, vintage suitcases just might fit right in. White painted luggage makes a unique and functional bedside table in this eclectic bedroom.

This totally personal and unique collection of cases is as eclectic as its surroundings. Think of the fun someone had searching for and finding those vintage treasures.

And one last stack of vintage suitcases reminds us that the bedroom is always a great place to show off such a collection. And yes, they do seem to “belong” in this cozy and inviting room.

a must

Have you ever bought one little thing that changed your whole wardrobe?  That is how I feel about this shawl.  There are so many different ways to wear it, it is amazing.  My favorite way to sport it at the moment is around my waist.  It makes every old dress I own feel like a new one.  It even looks great just over jeans.  So, here are just a few of the ways we came up with wearing it…  hurry in to get yours!

kim’s remodel

Our very own Kim from the Willows just went through a major remodel at her house and she, ever so generously, let us come snap some pictures of the amazing job they did!  If you look at the before pictures, you will see they moved back the middle wall of the house (where the stove and refrigerator used to be) separating the kitchen from the now-dining room, to make the kitchen bigger and the dining room slightly narrower.  They put in new doors and windows, new floors and a completely new kitchen.  We think it looks absolutely amazing, Kim!  You certainly have an eye for design!  No wonder you work at the Willows… (heehee).

Kim even let us sneak a quick peek into her daughter’s lovely room, which is full of treasures from the Willows…

Kim, thanks so much for sharing your amazing home with us!

What do you think, everyone?  Do you love it as much as we do?

still our favorite shirt

So, I’ve told you before, but we cannot seem to keep this shirt in stock.  We just reordered them and already they are going fast again.  If you haven’t been in to try one on, you better hurry…

a birthday dinner

My sweet daughter Emily and my dear friend Laurie threw me the most amazing little birthday dinner on the beach this year.  They hauled tables and dishes and tablecloths and everything they needed for a lovely dinner all down to the bay.  It was a simply wonderful evening surrounded by family and friends, delicious food and good (often hilarious) conversation.  I truly feel so very blessed!

they’re back!

We paid a visit to our favorite pumpkin lady, Lynne Bonnell, the other day and picked up some new pumpkins for the season.  Can you believe its that time already?  They always go fast, so hurry in to pick out your favorite ones!

a little party. (or pictures of food).

Last week we had a little cocktail party for my husband’s birthday.  Nothing special, we just threw together some snacks and drinks and all hung out and had some good laughs.  Of course, I only got pictures of the food…  oh, well.  My current favorite appetizer is the absolute simplest.  Figs, sliced in half with some goat cheese and balsamic, bake and done.  Give it a try sometime.

Oh, and I grabbed a bunch of desserts from Urban Cookie.  Mmmm, doesn’t get much more delicious than that…

Do you have any go-to appetizers, drinks or desserts for parties?  Do share!
